A Culinary, Onsen, and Ski Odyssey in Niseko, Japan

Amid the snow-clad peaks of Hokkaido, Japan, lies a hidden gem – Niseko. Known for its “oyuki,” or heavy snow, this winter haven is more than just a ski paradise; it’s a culinary and sensory treasure trove. My recent sojourn at the exquisite Kyubi Spirit Lodge in Niseko was nothing short of magical, a perfect blend of thrilling ski escapades, gastronomic explorations, and luxurious living.

Enchanting Stay at Kyubi Spirit Lodge

The Kyubi Spirit Lodge, the visionary creation of a renowned Japanese tea entrepreneur, was the centerpiece of our Niseko adventure. Merging traditional Japanese architecture with panoramic vistas, the lodge offered an immersive experience. The highlight was the private onsen, overlooking the majestic, snow-laden mountains – a serene sanctuary post-skiing.

The lodge’s strategic location in the heart of Niseko provided easy access to some of the finest dining venues. Our stay was further enhanced by the luxurious amenities, including two elegant Western-style bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and two authentic Japanese tatami rooms.

The grand dining area, with its sweeping views, was perfect for social gatherings. Culinary aficionados would appreciate the well-equipped kitchens, including a commercial-grade setup with a pizza oven.

The large sentō-style bath offers a peaceful bathing experience, and the multiple balconies seamlessly connect us with nature. The expansive ski locker and convenient two-car garage added to the ease of our ski adventures.

Our skiing journey across the Niseko United, encompassing four major resorts, was exhilarating. We started at the bustling Grand Hirafu, with its diverse range of runs suitable for all skill levels. The longest lift, the Niseko Gondola at Niseko Village, took us on breathtaking slopes, zig-zagging beneath the Country Road Chair.

Annupuri’s off-piste trails offered a tranquil skiing experience, while Hanazono delighted us with its well-maintained facilities and enchanting tree runs filled with powder stashes and glades. Guided by an expert, the backcountry skiing unveiled hidden gems and untouched powder fields, culminating our skiing adventure on a high note.

A Feast for the Senses

A Feast for the Senses

Niseko‘s culinary landscape is a delightful fusion of local Hokkaido flavors and global influences. Fresh local produce, sourced from Hokkaido’s rich farmlands, featured prominently in every dish, offering a fresh, seasonal culinary journey. The highlight of our gastronomic escapades was Santo, where Italian cuisine met Japanese finesse.

The fusion of cooking styles resulted in innovative and flavorful dishes. We also relished authentic Indian curries, perfect after a chilly day on the slopes, and fresh sushi that captured the ocean’s essence. Niseko’s Alpine cuisine, with its rustic charm, provided a comforting embrace. The pizzas and pasta we savored were as authentic as anything outside Italy.
