A Father & Son Niseko Backcountry Adventure: A Passage into Manhood

On a beautiful morning in February, my 14-year-old son and I embarked on a journey from the serene Nine Tails Spirit Lodge, aiming to conquer the summit of Mount Annupuri. Nestled in the heart of Niseko, Mount Annupuri stands majestically between the towering Mt. Yotei and the expansive Sea of Japan, its base cradling five ski resorts known globally for their enchanting powder. Enthusiasts from across the globe are drawn to this range for the unparalleled backcountry experiences it offers, where the thrill of descending from the summit through bowls and valleys in Niseko’s world-class powder is unmatched.

Fueling our bodies at the lodge with a swift yet energy-rich breakfast of yogurt, fruit, and nuts, we set off, filled with anticipation for the steep ascent ahead. As our car approached the Grand Hirafu gondola, clouds began to weave around the peaks of Annupuri and Mt. Yotei, yet the summit remained visible, promising a day of unforgettable views.

single chairlift

The long journey upward involved a series of lifts, from the gondola to the “King Hooded Quad,” and finally, a hair-raising single chairlift, humorously referred to as the “Pizza Box” due to its small seat.

With our boards secured to our backpacks

At gate three, the real adventure began as we left the resort area and entered into the backcountry of Niseko. With our boards secured to our backpacks, we faced the steep half-hour climb towards the peak. The initial ascent was the most challenging, testing our conditioning. My son and I pushed forward, taking breaks when necessary but always persisting.

we reached the ridge

Thankfully, as we reached the ridge, the slope eased, though the strong winds did not. Battling the gusts that constantly tested our balance, we pushed forward along the ridge toward the summit.

Reaching the final stretch

Reaching the final stretch, the wind shifted, aiding our climb, with the boards on our backs acting as sails in the wind. This climb, while not technical, demanded focus and determination. At the summit, a breathtaking vista unfolded before us – a sea of clouds below, with mountain peaks emerging like islands.

The entire Annupuri range was visible, stretching to the Sea of Japan, with Mt. Yotei commanding the east and snow-covered volcanic peaks piercing the sky all around us. It was a moment of awe and gratitude, a poignant lesson in the value of perseverance and the rewards it brings, especially meaningful as my son neared his 15th year of manhood.

Niseko Backcountry Adventure: Celebrating our achievement with a hug and a fist bump

Celebrating our achievement with a hug and a fist bump, we then embarked on our descent. Selecting our path, we plunged down the eastern face, riding through the windswept powder fields Niseko is famous for, down to the distant Hirafu ski resort. Cutting through the layer of clouds and into the trees, our journey down to the groomed runs was a triumphant conclusion to our morning adventure.
